Marc's April 2005 update

Today I tried the L5D meal from the Flight Kitchen here at "The Rock." Honestly, all-in-all, I've been pretty impressed with both the quantity and quality of food the folks here provide. And the going price (a mere $2.70) is pretty light on the wallet as well. You'll notice in the picture that there's no soda... some may complain about that, but realize that I chose Supplement D because it's the ONLY one they serve that has bottled H2O... a MUST on hot days full of low levels and airdrops!

Meal Contents:

Ham & American on Wheat (Lettuce, Tomato, Mustard, Mayo included for your dining pleasure)
Cheetos (last Weds turned up some normal potato chips)
Large Muffin (I've been getting the Banana Nut version lately... could use a change soon)
Yogurt (They like to serve the Cherry Vanilla flavor here... pretty tasty, but this gets runny in the plane if you don't get to it quickly)
Fruit Juice (Orange or Grape is typical)
Bottled Water (A MUST!)
Apple Sauce (Haven't seen this one before... usually it's a piece of fruit)
Pudding Cup (This one's Vanilla.. last Weds turned up Chocolate)
Jell-o type snack
Salted Peanuts
Granola Bar
The Illustrious "Dining Packet, Type III"... (Utensils, Napkin, etc.)

The meals that I've tried so far have been very consistent in terms of amount of food, food items, and quality of food. I haven't had a bad sandwich, or missing snack item. The only real gripe I've got with the Flight Kitchen is that they don't mark the meal type on the TOP of the Box instead of somewhere else so that you can see who's lunch you've got as you pull it out of the brown paper sack they deliver them in.

Keep on Rockin', Little Rock! As a CIQ Student, this is a great deal. It's a bit healthier than going to the Vitamin-G soaked fast food options here on base, and it costs a lot less, too.

I'll try to have more examples of other meals that I encounter as I go through the program.

FYI: The L1 (Ham and Turkey with American on a Hoagie Roll) is a good option. The Peanut Butter on White is NOT a good option. Rumor has it that the kitchen presents you with 2 slices of bread and several "packets" of peanut butter for a "do-it-yourself" experience. Not very fun when you're trying to squeeze in a quick bite in between airdrops or multiple instrument approaches.

April 2005 update

It's been a while, man.. About 2 1/2 years since I sent you a picture of the
lunches here at Little Rock. You've proudly displayed the myriad of food
displayed on top of my low-level route chart. Brother, the food here SUCKS
now! They raised the price to $3 for a "large" (what's "LARGE" about it!?)
meal. They've taken out at LEAST half of the extra items (muffin, jello,
chips.. That type stuff) for the same price! I ate a L1A (Read that as a
Turkey and Ham with cheese sub w/o condiments, served with a Diet Coke, some
Chips, an apple, a granola bar, and some H2O) last night on an NVG-Airland
trainer.. I've never felt so sick in my life. I had to ask the IP to stop
the jet so I could get off. I haven't felt sick on a plane since a Hot
August Low-Level Route here at KLRF in 2002! This is just unacceptable!! And
for more money, too!? WTFO!
